55th Valokuvatorstai photo challenge, “Kas kummaa”, probably best translated as “WTF?”. I took this pic at Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki. This creature is an axolotl, a neotenic mole salamander, arguably the weirdest creature on our planet. Looks like an alien from outer space, a monster from a bad science fiction novel. Perhaps this is an unfinished prototype or a cruel joke from God? A genetic experiment gone horribly wrong? Creepy.

WTF indeed. The first thing that hit me was Frank Herbert’s Dune with its axolotl tanks, but it was intriguing to learn that these strange creatures have been a wider inspiration to art.

Did you photoshop these axolotl? If not you should report the place that own them, as they are seriously underfed and their gills look very unhealthy. Look completely ill. Do a google search for axolotl and see how they should look.
